Obstacle Mapping: Finding What Actually Blocks Progress.
Vague motivation problems usually have specific causes. Someone who cannot start a project might be dealing with unclear success criteria rather than laziness. Someone who stops mid-task might be hitting a technical gap rather than losing interest. Obstacle Mapping is designed to find the actual cause rather than treat the symptom.
How the session is structured
The session runs for three hours with a short break. The first hour covers recent examples of stalled progress - specific situations, not general patterns. The second hour uses a structured questioning format to trace each example back to its earliest decision point. The third hour produces a written output.
That written output functions as a download guide to your own obstacle patterns. It lists each identified barrier, its likely origin, and a ranked set of practical responses. Unlike a generic download manual, this document is built entirely from your examples and uses your own language to describe the problems.
The ranking matters. Not all obstacles carry equal weight. Some barriers, once removed, dissolve several downstream problems at once. The session prioritises those high-leverage points rather than producing an exhaustive list that is difficult to act on.
Participants leave with a document they can use independently. There is no follow-up session required, though one optional check-in at four weeks is available if needed. The method is designed to be transferable - once you have worked through the process once, the questioning framework becomes something you can apply yourself.
One participant described the output as the first time a planning document had matched how she actually thinks about problems rather than how she was supposed to think about them.Programme Structure.
Session Breakdown
- Recent examples review - collecting three to five specific instances of stalled progress
- Root cause tracing - working back from each example to its earliest identifiable cause
- Barrier categorisation - grouping obstacles by type: knowledge gaps, structural issues, unclear criteria, or environmental factors
- Impact ranking - ordering barriers by how many downstream problems each one creates
- Written plan production - documenting findings and practical responses in a structured format
- Optional four-week check-in - reviewing which responses worked and adjusting where needed
